The Chicago Department of Transportation awarded Rausch Construction with the honor of Structural Contractor of the Year for 2008, for Rausch’s efforts on this project.
project details
Rausch coordinated all work with the Chicago Department of Transportation and Metra to minimize the impact of the construction activities. Due to timeline constraints and Metra train schedules, the project was completed at a fast pace schedule of seven days a week, over a nine month period, to open the bridge to traffic prior to the Taste of Chicago. As the project was located in downtown Chicago near Grant Park, Michigan Avenue “Magnificent Mile”, and the Art Institute of Chicago, consideration to nearby vehicular and pedestrian traffic needed to be taken. Rausch also carefully monitored vibration during the course of the project, with emphasis during caisson drilling, excavation, and demolition operations, due to the sensitivity of the valuable artwork at the Art Institute.
Rausch self-performed the majority of work including 3500 cubic yards of concrete placement within columns, footings, piers, abutments, sidewalks, roadways, bridge deck, and loading docks. Other self-performed work consisted of installation of 210 tons of rebar and the erection of 300 tons of structural steel beams.
